Artist Statement
For my Concepts 1 final, I created a piece that examines the absurd pricing of life-saving medications. These treatments, often priced so high they resemble luxury goods, are kept artificially scarce, leaving many unable to afford them. To address this issue, I staged an auction featuring five photographs of needles, each symbolizing a different medicine.
During the performance, participants were given a simulated allowance of $1,600, represented by $100 bills stained with blood. Select audience members were assigned “insurance,” which increased their purchasing power by two to six times. This disparity was intended to critique the inequities in the healthcare system, where access to essential medicine often depends on privilege rather than need.
Artist Note: This piece was conceptualized, filmed, and edited prior to the death of the United Healthcare CEO.
